A sermon preached with revisions on March 5, 2006 at the Bakers Creek Baptist church by James Carl Jones pastor.

Before we get started this morning I want to remind you the reason that we stand when we read the text of the sermon from scripture. We tell everyone that is present that this church stands on the word of God and that alone. I read a story this pass week that went like this,

A school teacher was applying for a teaching position at a country school. The person giving him his examination ask him does he teach that the world is flat or round, to which he responded how do you want it taught, I can teach it both ways.

Here we have only one source and so only one conclusion to question that are asked.

Make no mistake about it Jesus was the Messiah that was promised to the people of Israel

Luke 4:17-19
17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind , to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

This was a quote from Isaiah 61:1 and deals with Messiah and what he was to do when he appeared.

Isaiah 61

61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

This is what MESSIAH was to do, the word ANOINTED in Isaiah 61:1 is the English word for the Hebrew word mashiah In the New Testament Greek it is Christos translated in the English as CHRIST.

John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the one, the ANOINTED one of God that was to come.

Matt 11:2-3

2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

John knew that Jesus was doing the works that were to be done by the ANOINTED or CHRIST, notice when he heard of the WORKS OF CHRIST.

Matt 11:2-5

2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

He also knew that a prophet was to come and like a prophet do mighty works.

Deut 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

He proved it during his life with Miracles and in Death he proved he was the sent one or the Messiah by God raising him from the dead.

Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Acts 3:15

And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

1 Cor 6:14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.

So when he heals the Blind it is a testimony to him being the Messiah, the sent one from God.

We all enjoy happy endings or I should say happy out comes, coming to people who have gone through hardships.

The bible is full of accounts of people who had hardships and trails which out come were uncertain, but at the end of the bible accounts we are told of them having a happy ending. Joseph is a good ensample of a person who had a life full of trails and when all was said and done had a happy ending. His story may well be called from the pit to the palace

We sure don’t like to read about someone going through trails and then not knowing how it turns out, or what kind of an ending did the person have, be it good or bad. The book of Jonah is one that leaves us wondering as to what happened to the one who was going through trails, grant you it came about by his own hands, yet we would like to have known if the rebellious servant came around to his masters way of thinking and by doing that have a happy ending.

Let me this morning direct your attention to the life of one called Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus. Bartimaeus was blinded and we are not told if this was from birth or from an accident, but none the less he was blind and could not see.

Mark 10:46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

Jericho was what we would call a major city in the days when our Lord walk this earth

If someone was going to beg for substance, where would you go to Eureka or Evansville? I believe if you want more people to see you then Evansville you may go. But as far as being among a people that would look on your plight and response it your need, I could not think of a better people to be sitting alone the road then in this little town.

Bartimaeus knew where to sit and receive the things needed to substance his life

Mark 10:47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

Not when John Calvin passed by with his limited atonement

Not when someone from Rome with his work list for you to take passed by

But Jesus Christ the Messiah, the Son of David passed by did he cry out. The son of David was another title that Messiah was to have.

Isa 9:6-7
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Now when he heard the name of Jesus of Nazareth in his ears it trigger no less things he had heard from people who had passed before, how he had healed the sick and raised the dead, and HEALED THE BLIND. He knew that his solution to his problem was within arm reach and he was not about to let him pass without trying to get his attention.

Mark 10:48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

B. When we know that our last chance to do something is before us it causes us to act.

Bartimaeus knew that he may never get this chance again, that his solution to his problem was passing by.

How many of you this morning have realized that you are a sinner, that you are not living the life that God wants you to. The Holy Spirit of God has convicted you of the need of a savior and that Jesus the Christ is the solution to your problem. Yet you let the opportunity pass you by because you say if not today you will come but maybe next Sunday. You need to treat the Spirit call as your last call to come, because the bible tells us that you or I am not promised another Sunday. So when you see from the scripture Jesus Christ passing by, then you need to come.

Mark 10:49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

You may be here this morning and believe that you are passed the saving point that you have crossed the line. That God would not have one such as your self as a Son or Daughter with the sin that you have committed in your life. I have a message for you that are in such a state, and the message is

From the Savior own lips he says

Matt 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

It is one thing to realize that you are in need of deliverance; it is another thing to think that there is no one to deliver you, but the bible tells us that Jesus came to

1 Tim 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners ; of whom I am chief.

Jesus is ready to take you in this morning Mr. and Miss. ANY MAN.

Mark 10:50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

Casting away his Garment

Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags ; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Bartimaeus is a sense showed us that we are in need of a new garment

That we cannot stand in God present dress as we are

Putting on the garment that Christ offers in the Gospel

Rom 1:16-17
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Mark 10:51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

A simple question and a simple answer

Salvation is simple and able to be understood by all

Acts 16:30-32
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved ?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

What kind of salvation would God offer that you would need a library or a collage degree to understand

I don’t believe that you will be able to stand in front of God and say, it was too hard and who could understand it.

Mark 10:52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

Faith in Jesus ability to give him his sight

Faith in what Jesus accomplished on the cross and his rising from the dead will get you saved

1 Cor 15:1-4
15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Just as Bartimaeus, deliverance was immediately so to will be you’re cleansing.

Then you will be more then happy to follow Jesus in the way.

Just as the bible will tell you the way of Salvation, it will show you the way of a life that is pleasing to God.

In Mark 10:46-52 we have a type of an person unsaved, becoming saved

Mark 10:46 blind Bartimaeus,

The unsaved person is blind to the things of God.

2 Cor 4:3-4
3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Acts 26:15-18
15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.
16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

But by the Spirit of God the veil is lifted

1 Thess 1:5-6
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

1 Cor 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Rom 15:16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

2 Thess 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

It was impossible for him to work or to support himself.

Mankind can not fix his standing with God.

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Mark 10:47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

Bartimaeus reacted when he heard the words of the people

Salvation comes when the preaching of the word is heard and the Holy Spirit press on the heart the truth of the word.

Rom 10:8-17
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Eph 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God :

Mark 10:48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace:

The word today says to hold your peace for the bible is false and we don’t need to look to it for salvation

People of his day told him to be silent and not call to Jesus for deliverance. For Bartimaeus to have remain silent was to remain blind, for you to not call out to Jesus for salvation is to remain in your sins.

John 5:37-40
37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent him ye believe not.
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

Mark 10:49 Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

There are those who say that Jesus died for some and not all,

The bible says he

1 Tim 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

1 Tim 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Rev 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

He was depending on others to provide for him life.

We too need not MANY but ONE to provide life for us.

John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life .
Their are people who will tell you to look to Jesus with one eye and to fix the other on something else.

What Good is there in life when we have to play ping pong with our salvation
The old saying is or I heard it somewhere is:
I’m busier then a one eye cat watching two mouse holes.
The chances are good that one mouse will get away, because the cats attention is on something else. That what happens when it applied to your salvation, by having to watch two things instead of one? Or I should say THE ONE. I would much rather look to God son and no other and enjoy my salvation which is complete in him, then to divide my time between him and another.
We started this sermon with telling you how Jesus proved he was the Messiah by his miracles and by the resurrection from the dead.
We can say that he because of his resurrection we will have a happy ending and live happily ever after in his presences, all because of Christ Jesus the risen one.

1 Cor 15:12-22
12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Won’t you come today and receive from him forgiveness of Sins and a happy ending. Jesus came from Heaven so that you might have life.

Mark 10:49
And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort , rise; he calleth thee.
